Pakistan could face economic losses of around Rs190 billion in a single day because of protests, strikes and road closures, according to Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. The estimate covers losses from reduced economic activity, exports, tax collection, foreign investment and business disruptions.

The estimate came as political protests and road closures affected movement and commercial activity in different parts of Pakistan. Aurangzeb said the Ministry of Finance’s Economic Wing calculated the potential impact by looking at several areas of the economy.

Where Could the Economic Losses Come From?

According to the finance minister, around Rs144 billion of the estimated daily loss is linked to GDP. Export disruptions could account for another Rs26 billion, while the potential impact on foreign direct investment was estimated at about Rs3 billion per day.

The assessment also includes losses in provincial economic activity. Aurangzeb said agriculture could lose around Rs26 billion per day, while industrial losses in the provinces could exceed Rs20 billion. Reduced tax collection and higher spending on law and order could add further costs.

However, the Rs190 billion figure does not mean that the government would directly pay Rs190 billion from the national treasury. Instead, it represents the wider economic activity that officials say could be disrupted when roads are blocked, businesses close and transportation and trade are affected.

How Protests Affect Businesses and Daily Life

The economic impact can extend beyond large companies. Protests and shutdowns can disrupt public transport, shops, small businesses, IT services and telecommunications. They can also affect hospitals, construction workers, street vendors and other people who depend on daily economic activity.

Finance Ministry estimates have previously been discussed in connection with PTI protests and road closures in Islamabad and other parts of Pakistan. In November 2024, Pakistani media reported the Rs190 billion daily estimate as protests disrupted roads and commercial activity.

What Does the Rs190 Billion Estimate Mean?

The figure should be understood as a government estimate of potential economic losses, rather than an independently audited calculation of direct cash losses. The actual impact can vary depending on how long protests continue, how widely they spread and which sectors are affected.

For Pakistan, prolonged disruptions can put pressure on business activity, trade, transportation and government revenues. The latest estimate highlights how road closures and large-scale protests can affect the wider economy beyond the immediate political situation.
