Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan underwent a medical examination at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad. He was moved from Adiala Jail during the night of August 20-21, 2026.

Khan was later taken back to Adiala Jail at around 5am. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed the development.

The medical examination followed an August 18 Supreme Court order. The court had directed authorities to shift Khan to Shifa International Hospital for medical examination and treatment. However, authorities took him to PIMS instead. The government said security concerns around Shifa led to the change.

Doctors Examine Imran Khan at PIMS

A medical team examined Imran Khan at PIMS. According to the government, the team included an ophthalmologist, cardiologist and physician.

Attaullah Tarar said the doctors declared Khan medically fit after the examination. His sister, Dr Uzma Khan, was also present during the medical assessment, according to the minister.

PIMS later confirmed that two specialists from Shifa International Hospital also took part in Khan’s eye examination. The PIMS administration said its medical board completed the medical fitness report.

However, the hospital did not disclose confidential details from the report.

The government said the decision to use PIMS was based on security concerns surrounding Shifa International Hospital. Officials also said Khan would continue to receive medical facilities whenever required.

Supreme Court Case Over Hospital Transfer

The decision to take Imran Khan to PIMS instead of Shifa International Hospital led to a legal dispute.

Dr Uzma Khan filed a contempt petition. She alleged that government officials had not followed the Supreme Court’s August 18 directions. The government rejected the criticism and said security concerns were behind the change.

The case remained before the Supreme Court in September. On September 17, the court sought assistance from Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan.

The court was examining questions about the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court and the newly established Federal Constitutional Court in the hospital-transfer case. The bench later adjourned the matter for three weeks.

For now, the medical examination has been completed at PIMS. Shifa International Hospital specialists also took part in the eye examination, according to PIMS. The legal dispute over the hospital-transfer order remains a separate issue before the courts.
