Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has nominated international aviation executive Adrian Hamilton-Manns as its next chief executive officer (CEO). However, his appointment still requires the necessary clearances. Reports published on October 17, 2026, say he could take charge by the end of the month. At the time of reporting, an official appointment announcement was still pending.

Hamilton-Manns is a New Zealand aviation executive with nearly three decades of industry experience. He has led airlines in the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa. He has also held senior commercial roles at several international carriers. His nomination comes as PIA undergoes management changes following its transfer to private management.

Who Is Adrian Hamilton-Manns?

Hamilton-Manns is known for leading two low-cost airlines: Oman-based SalamAir and Kazakhstan’s FlyArystan. His experience covers airline launches, commercial planning, business restructuring and daily operations.

He became SalamAir’s chief executive in 2024. During his tenure, the Muscat-based airline worked on expanding its network and business. However, he left the role in 2026. According to reports, Yaqoob Al Kiyumi took over as chief executive on October 1.

Before joining SalamAir, Hamilton-Manns served as president and CEO of FlyArystan. The airline operates as the low-cost subsidiary of Kazakhstan’s Air Astana Group. He held the position from 2020 to 2024. This role gave him experience in managing an airline in a competitive regional market.

Hamilton-Manns also held senior commercial positions at several international airlines. These included India’s IndiGo, South African Airways, Virgin Australia’s Pacific Blue, Indonesia’s Mandala Airlines and Qatar Airways. He began his aviation career at Air New Zealand in 1997. His background includes airline operations, commercial planning and business transformation.

Why Has He Been Nominated to Lead PIA?

The nomination comes as PIA moves through a major restructuring process. On June 29, 2026, the airline entered private management under an investor consortium led by Arif Habib Corporation. The new management now faces pressure to improve the airline’s financial performance and operational efficiency.

PIA has faced financial losses, operational problems and fleet-related challenges for years. Therefore, its new leadership will need to address these issues. Improving passenger services and strengthening the airline’s commercial position will also be important.

Hamilton-Manns’ experience with low-cost airlines could help PIA improve cost control and revenue management. However, PIA operates as a full-service airline. As a result, its management would need to adapt any low-cost airline strategies to PIA’s business model and operational needs.

His nomination does not guarantee an immediate turnaround. The airline’s performance will depend on the decisions made by its leadership and the successful implementation of its restructuring plans.

When Will Adrian Hamilton-Manns Take Charge of PIA?

Reports published on October 17 suggest Hamilton-Manns could take charge by the end of October. However, he must first complete the required security checks and other clearances. At the time of reporting, officials had not formally announced his appointment.

PIA had also previously sought to recruit former Ethiopian Airlines chief executive Tewolde Gebremariam. He later joined Air India. Meanwhile, PIA’s management has continued its search for an experienced executive to oversee the airline’s financial and operational restructuring.

For now, Hamilton-Manns remains the nominated candidate rather than a formally confirmed CEO. Further details about his joining date and management priorities are expected once the required procedures are complete.
