Portugal have reached the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals after beating Norway 2-1 on Sunday in Porto. The victory gave Portugal a fourth straight win in Group A4 and confirmed their place in the knockout stage.
Portugal entered the match without Cristiano Ronaldo, who had left the national team camp before the game against Denmark. Despite his absence, Jorge Jesus’ side continued their strong run and remained unbeaten in the group.
Portugal Complete Comeback Against Norway
Norway took the lead in the 36th minute when Kristoffer Ajer scored with an excellent finish. Portugal responded quickly, with João Cancelo finding the net just two minutes later to level the score.
The hosts continued to control much of the match after the break. Their pressure eventually produced the winning goal in the 79th minute.
Gonçalo Ramos scored from close range after João Félix created the chance. Ramos started in place of Ronaldo and delivered another important performance for Portugal.
Portugal then had to defend their lead with 10 players. Francisco Conceição received two yellow cards in quick succession and left the field in the closing stages.
The team held on to secure the 2-1 victory.
Portugal Lead Group A4
The result leaves Portugal at the top of Group A4 with 12 points from four matches. They have won every game so far and hold a six-point advantage over second-placed Denmark.
Portugal have scored nine goals and conceded four during their four group matches. Denmark sit second with six points, while Wales and Norway have three points each.
The top two teams in the group will progress to the Nations League quarter-finals. Portugal have already guaranteed one of those positions.
Portugal also defeated Denmark 4-2 earlier in the international window. João Cancelo, Gonçalo Ramos, Vitinha and João Félix scored in that match.
Ronaldo Absence Overshadowed Portugal’s Run
Portugal’s progress has come amid continued attention on Cristiano Ronaldo. The veteran forward left the squad before the Denmark match after learning he would not start.
Ronaldo remains Portugal’s leading international goalscorer, but the team has continued to perform without him. Ramos has taken a more prominent role in attack and scored in both the Denmark and Norway victories.
Portugal will now focus on their remaining Group A4 matches against Denmark and Wales in November. With their quarter-final place already secured, the team can use those games to strengthen their position at the top of the group.
