Pakistan is exploring a PIA fleet revamp with possible support from Airbus and Rolls-Royce. The plan could help Pakistan International Airlines improve its fleet and international operations.

Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan discussed the proposal with British High Commissioner Jane Marriott in Islamabad. British officials shared details about discussions involving Airbus and Rolls-Royce. The talks cover possible aircraft, engines and financing support for PIA.

Airbus and Rolls-Royce Talks

The PIA fleet revamp remains under discussion. Pakistan has not signed a final purchase or leasing agreement with Airbus or Rolls-Royce.

The talks cover potential aircraft arrangements and engine support. British officials also discussed possible export credit support. Such financing could give Pakistan more options when it considers future aircraft deals.

PIA could also use aircraft leasing to meet its short-term fleet needs. Leasing may allow the airline to add aircraft while it works on longer-term purchasing plans.

Why PIA Needs More Aircraft

PIA has faced fleet and operational challenges for several years. Some aircraft have remained unavailable because of maintenance needs and limited access to spare parts.

The government wants PIA to improve its operational reliability and passenger services. Jam Kamal also highlighted the importance of maintaining direct international routes.

A stronger fleet could help PIA operate flights more reliably. It could also support the airline as it works to strengthen its international network.

Pakistan Also Discusses Boeing Aircraft

Airbus and Rolls-Royce are not the only companies involved in Pakistan’s fleet discussions.

The government has also held talks with Boeing about PIA’s future aircraft needs. Those discussions included faster aircraft deliveries and possible interim leasing arrangements.

Pakistan has also explored financing options for Boeing aircraft, including Boeing 787 Dreamliners. Officials have separately discussed spare parts for grounded Boeing 777 aircraft.

These talks show that Pakistan is considering several options for PIA. The strategy could combine aircraft purchases, leasing and maintenance support.

What Happens Next?

The Airbus and Rolls-Royce discussions have not yet produced a final deal. Pakistan still needs to negotiate aircraft numbers, financing, engines, leasing terms and delivery schedules.

For now, the government wants to improve PIA’s fleet availability and operational performance. If the talks progress, they could become an important part of the airline’s long-term modernisation plan.
