Pakistan is finalising a plan to provide uninterrupted internet access for the IT sector. Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced the initiative on Saturday. The plan aims to protect technology companies from internet disruptions and support the government’s target of increasing IT exports to $15 billion.
The minister announced this during a joint session organised by the American Business Forum (ABF) and the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). The event, titled “Taking Pakistan’s IT Industry to the Next Level,” brought together government officials, technology companies and academic representatives.
Pakistan Internet Access for IT Sector: What Is the Government Planning?
The government is preparing a plan to protect IT companies from internet outages. According to Shaza Fatima Khawaja, the proposed system would whitelist internet connections used by IT companies.
This measure aims to help technology businesses maintain internet access during periods of disruption. However, the government has not yet explained how the system will work or which companies will qualify.
The minister also said the government plans to announce the initiative formally. The announcement confirms that work is underway, but it does not mean that zero internet outages have already been achieved.
Why Reliable Internet Matters for Pakistan’s IT Industry
Reliable internet access is essential for software companies, freelancers, and IT exporters. These businesses depend on stable connections to communicate with international clients, access cloud services, and complete online work.
Internet disruptions can interrupt business operations and affect service delivery. They can also create problems for companies working with clients in different time zones.
Pakistan has faced growing concerns about internet reliability. On September 10, the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication expressed dissatisfaction with internet services. The committee also called for practical steps to improve connectivity.
Government Targets $15 Billion in IT Exports.
The proposed internet access plan is part of Pakistan’s wider digital economy strategy. During the LUMS session, participants discussed IT exports, digital connectivity, skills development and technology-sector reforms.
The government also highlighted efforts to expand fibre-optic networks and mobile broadband coverage. In addition, officials are working on spectrum allocation and satellite regulation to support better connectivity.
These measures could help strengthen Pakistan’s digital infrastructure. However, the government has not released an estimate of the financial losses caused by internet outages.
What Happens Next for Pakistan Internet Access?
The government is expected to share more details about its uninterrupted internet access plan. IT companies and digital workers are waiting for information about eligibility, implementation, and the proposed whitelisting system.
For now, the announcement shows that the government is working to improve internet reliability for the IT sector. Further details will clarify whether the plan can provide consistent connectivity and support Pakistan’s $15 billion IT export target.
