A suicide attack near a mosque at the old Police Lines in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, killed at least 16 people and injured dozens during Friday prayers on September 18, 2026. The casualties included five police personnel and 11 civilians, according to reports citing police officials.

The explosion occurred while worshippers were gathered for Friday prayers. Initial reports described the incident as a blast near the old Police Lines. At the same time, later information from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police, Zulfiqar Hameed, indicated that an explosives-laden vehicle was involved in the attack.

Rescue Operation Underway in Kohat

Rescue 1122 teams reached the scene after the explosion and began shifting injured people to nearby hospitals. The District Headquarters Hospital in Kohat declared an emergency as casualties were brought in for treatment.

The blast caused substantial damage to the mosque’s outer section, created a crater outside the building, and brought down part of a wall, according to rescue and police officials. Roads leading toward the affected area were also closed, while additional security personnel were deployed.

Reports on the number of injured have varied as rescue and hospital authorities continued assessing the casualties. Some later reports put the number above 50, while earlier hospital reporting had confirmed at least 25 injured people.

Following the explosion, police and Counter Terrorism Department personnel launched a security and clearance operation around the old Police Lines. Reports said security forces were dealing with militants inside the compound following the blast.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed responsibility for the attack. Investigations into the bombing, including the identity of those involved and the circumstances surrounding the assault, are continuing.

The Kohat Police Lines attack remains a developing story, with officials expected to provide further details as rescue operations and the security response progress.
