An Islamabad Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) has issued a contempt notice to the Adiala Jail superintendent in the case involving Imaan Mazari and her husband, Hadi Ali Chattha.

The court took action after jail authorities failed to produce the couple through a video link during Saturday’s hearing. ATC Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra had ordered the authorities to ensure their appearance.

Why the ATC Issued the Contempt Notice

The court had issued the video-link order during an earlier hearing. However, Adiala Jail authorities could not arrange the couple’s appearance on Saturday.

Jail officials cited internet connectivity problems. The court noted that officials had already taken steps to resolve connectivity issues at the jail.

Technical teams from PTCL and NTC had also received directions to help restore the required internet connection.

The court expressed concern over the failure to follow its order. It then issued a contempt of court show-cause notice to the jail superintendent.

The notice asks the superintendent to explain why the court should not punish him with up to six months in prison.

Dispute Over Powers of Attorney

The court also discussed the powers of attorney for Imaan Mazari and Hadi Chattha.

Their lawyers told the court that they had not received the signed documents. The court had already directed jail officials to obtain the documents from the accused.

Officials previously told the court that the jail records did not show receipt of the documents. They also said they had started an inquiry into a disputed signature on one of the documents.

Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra observed that an accused has the basic right to appoint a lawyer. The court therefore treated the issue seriously.

What Happens Next

No jail official appeared before the court during Saturday’s proceedings. The court has now asked the Adiala Jail superintendent to respond to the contempt notice.

The ATC adjourned the hearing until Tuesday. The court is expected to consider the jail superintendent’s response and the pending legal issues involving Imaan Mazari and Hadi Chattha.

The case remains under judicial proceedings, and further developments are expected at the next hearing.
