The Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Islamabad administration have launched the Plastic-Free Islamabad Campaign to reduce plastic pollution. The initiative aims to make the federal capital cleaner and greener.

The campaign was launched on October 4. It follows directions from Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi and CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Sohail Ashraf.

The initiative focuses on reducing single-use plastics. It also encourages citizens, traders, businesses, educational institutions and food outlets to use reusable and environmentally friendly alternatives. According to officials, assistant commissioners will monitor the campaign in their respective areas.

Focus on Single-Use Plastic

Plastic bags have already been banned in Islamabad for several years. However, their use continues in different parts of the capital. The new campaign aims to improve public awareness and encourage better compliance with the ban.

Special attention will be given to markets, commercial areas, food outlets, educational institutions, parks and recreational areas. Other public spaces will also come under the campaign.

Meanwhile, traders and business communities are being encouraged to reduce the distribution of single-use plastic bags. They are also being asked to provide reusable or eco-friendly alternatives to customers.

Citizens also have an important role to play. They are encouraged to carry reusable bags, avoid unnecessary plastic packaging and dispose of waste properly.

Why the Campaign Matters

The CDA said reducing plastic waste can help keep Islamabad’s streets, markets, parks and public spaces clean. It can also reduce plastic waste in drainage systems and support better waste management across the city.

In addition, the campaign is part of wider efforts to improve Islamabad’s environment. The CDA has been carrying out plantation, landscaping and beautification activities on major roads, green belts, parks and other public areas.

Monitoring and Public Participation

Islamabad administration officials will oversee the campaign at the local level. At the same time, citizens and businesses are expected to help reduce plastic use.

Officials have stressed that a cleaner and more environmentally friendly Islamabad will require public cooperation. Therefore, both citizens and relevant authorities will have a role in making the initiative effective.

The Plastic-Free Islamabad Campaign is now underway. Further implementation and public participation are expected across the capital.
