Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Gates Foundation Chairman Bill Gates have discussed expanding cooperation between Pakistan and the Gates Foundation in agriculture, artificial intelligence (AI), digital innovation and public health.
The meeting took place in New York on Wednesday on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The Prime Minister’s Office said the talks also focused on Pakistan’s efforts to completely eradicate polio and the Foundation’s continued support for the country.
Focus on Agriculture and Emerging Technology
During the meeting, PM Shehbaz briefed Bill Gates on agricultural reforms being pursued by the government. The reforms include greater focus on innovation, biotechnology, climate resilience, research and improving farmers’ capacity.
Both sides agreed to explore possible cooperation in developing improved seeds, livestock genetics and emerging agricultural technologies. The areas discussed could support efforts to improve agricultural productivity and strengthen Pakistan’s ability to respond to climate-related challenges.
The discussion also covered opportunities to broaden cooperation in digital innovation and AI. The Prime Minister described the Gates Foundation as a long-standing partner in Pakistan’s socio-economic development and expressed interest in expanding collaboration beyond existing health-focused initiatives.
Polio Remains a Key Priority
Polio eradication remained an important part of the meeting. Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to eliminating the disease and thanked the Gates Foundation for its longstanding assistance.
Bill Gates, according to the Prime Minister’s Office, stressed that eliminating polio is essential for protecting future generations. He also appreciated the Prime Minister’s guidance to provincial governments in support of the nationwide polio vaccination programme.
The Gates Foundation has also supported Pakistan in areas including maternal and child health, nutrition, immunisation, digitisation and financial inclusion. Earlier this month, a Gates Foundation delegation met PM Shehbaz in Islamabad, where digital payments, food security, maternal health and financial inclusion were among the issues discussed.
Wider Pakistan-Gates Foundation Partnership
The latest meeting ended with a shared commitment to continue strengthening cooperation in sustainable development, technology and social-sector initiatives. PM Shehbaz also invited Bill Gates to visit Pakistan again at his earliest convenience.
The discussions come as Pakistan is also pursuing technology-focused agricultural reforms, including digital tools for farmers and plans to digitise agricultural land records under an emerging Agri Stack initiative.
