The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has established special units to counter fake news and what it describes as anti-state propaganda. The agency has also made cyber patrolling units functional across all regions to monitor activity in Pakistan’s cyberspace.
An NCCIA spokesperson announced the development on Sunday, October 4. The move comes as the agency increases its focus on online content, cybercrime complaints and digital investigations across the country.
NCCIA Strengthens Cyber Monitoring
NCCIA Director General Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi reviewed the new measures during a five-day visit to the agency’s circles across Punjab. During the visit, he inspected reporting centres, police stations and offices. He also met more than 500 complainants, according to the agency.
Rizvi directed officials to make the complaint and verification system easier for citizens to access. He also called for available resources to be used to provide timely justice to people affected by cybercrime.
The NCCIA chief said the agency would follow a zero-tolerance policy towards fake news and anti-state propaganda. At the same time, he stressed merit and transparency in investigations.
The agency’s official website says the NCCIA handles cyber investigations, digital forensics and the prosecution of cybercrime cases under Pakistan’s electronic crimes framework. It also identifies manipulated audio and video, deepfakes, identity deception and misuse of digital platforms as emerging digital threats.
Focus on Complaints and Investigations
During his Punjab tour, the NCCIA director general also reviewed pending complaints and cases. He inspected investigation branches, complaint cells, FIR branches and record-keeping arrangements.
Officials were instructed to improve the disposal of complaints and cases. They were also told to ensure transparent and merit-based investigations. According to the agency, timely justice for cybercrime victims remains a key priority.
Meanwhile, the creation of special units adds another layer to the NCCIA’s efforts to monitor online activity. Cyber patrolling units are now operational across regions. However, the agency has not publicly provided detailed information about their staffing, technical capabilities or specific procedures.
The NCCIA has also been expanding its regional presence. Its official platform lists offices across Islamabad, Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan. These offices provide citizens with channels for reporting cyber-related complaints.
For now, the latest announcement confirms the establishment and activation of the units. Further details about their operations and enforcement activities may emerge as the programme develops.
